Hidden amongst the thick pine and birch forests of the Green Mountains lie breathtaking rivers and lakes which offer visitors endless exploration opportunities.

Waterbury boasts the magnificent Winooski River, which is a paradise for fishermen, birdwatchers, recreational paddlers, and whitewater kayakers alike.

In the Spring, heavy Vermont snowfalls melt into the river and create exciting swift water canoeing and kayaking which gradually lower to create calm pools and channels where fishermen, Great Blue Herons, and Kingfishers share in the wealth.

The Winooski comes to life in late Spring and early Summer. Wildflowers line the shore of the heavily forested watershed and wildlife comes out to play on a daily basis. Beavers, river otters, and hundreds
of species of birds draw families to the river to soak up the scenery and the cool water.

In the Fall, mild days and cool nights turn the Winooski into a blaze of color creating an experience that you will never forget. Be sure to bring your camera!

There are several other waterways in the vicinity of Waterbury. A short drive will take you to Lake Champlain, Lake Elmore, the Green River Reservoir, or the Lamoille River. Wherever you choose to paddle, you will be rewarded with breathtaking scenery and unforgettable memories. Self-guided river trips, car-top canoe and kayak rentals and lakeside canoe and kayak rentals are available through Umiak Outfitters.
